Yes, they are two different things. Show preview pane in layout tells OE
whether to use the preview pane at all. The preview pane shows the content
of the selected message without you even having to open the message.
You have your message list and beside it, you have a preview pane which
shows the content of the selected message.
In the tools, options, that specifies whether to display the body of a
message in the preview pane. So this only applies if you have the preview
pane checked in layout. If you use the preview pane, but you uncheck this
then
you would see the preview pane, but all it would show is the headers of the
selected message (the from, to, subject). Then you would have to press the
space bar on the header in the preview pane to actually have it display the
rest of the message text in the preview pane. So that would be like opening
the message.
The reason for this is security. As someone said for security it is
advised not to use the preview pane because the content is actually being
shown without you even having to open the message and so a virus like script
could run.
You can eliminate some of the risk by having it show the preview pane in
layout, but not the content of the message until you press the space bar on
the header in the preview pane (the tools read option).
