Hi, Chris.
If you read my one-sentence message again, you'll see I get this. As Gary
King wrote, my question was, indeed, silly, but as he think he recognized, I
meant it rhetorically. FS could have chosen perhaps insert-control-x ("x" is
a memorable letter in "index") to avoid potential confusion. I was going to
suggest insert-control-i for "index," but that would also be a
finger-twister. I have a friend who needed to learn JAWS just this summer,
and she's starting with JAWS 10. She's already bewildered by the amount of
memorization that many of us on this list take for granted when using JAWS.
Now she has to unlearn an established keystroke because FS, in its infinite
wisdom, decided another function, word indexing, would have wider use? Then
there are creatures of habit, like me, who get used to doing something a
certain way and find it distracting to have to change that habit. JAWS's
keystrokes really are about habit, and I think FS should keep it in mind
when they devise keystrokes.
You gave an excellent explanation in a later message for the value of the
word index function. Credit to FS. I'm just urging that they not lose track
that JAWS is not as intuitive as many of us have come to think it is.

Here's the blurb from the what's new in JAWS 11 help. Virtualize Current
Window The Virtualize Current Window keystroke is now INSERT+ALT+W. The
previous keystroke, INSERT+CTRL+W, is now used for Word Index.
Hope this helps.

Silly question, probably, but has FS explained why they changed a familiar
keystroke (insert-control-w) for a new one instead of assigning that new
combination to the new function?

And if you can think of a key combination that is even less painful than
that, you can always go into the Keyboard Manager and ease the pain by
changing to it in the Action Menu.

Oops. I guess I'm adding the shift when I don't need to. Okay, slightly less
painful.

Here it is from the the What's new in Jaws help for version 11.
Virtualize Current Window The Virtualize Current Window keystroke is now
INSERT+ALT+W. The previous keystroke, INSERT+CTRL+W, is now used for Word
Index.
Virtualize Current Control The Virtualize Current Control keystroke is now
INSERT+ALT+SHIFT+W. The previous keystroke was INSERT+CTRL+SHIFT+W.
JAWS HELP is a nice resource.
