I would uninstall the latest Jaws 8 update through the add/remove programs feature in control pannel. Next I would re-install Jaws 8 from the CD that was shipped with Jaws 8. I can't see why this wouldn't work. Depending on whatever other accessibility software he has running, he might even try removing shared components to get a clean start.
