If you use windows xp with the classic view go to control panel,
administrative tools, services and tab to the list view.
As far as finding what each service does go to www. blackviper.com.

This is a very good way to improve performance. It is a very easy way to
make your machine unusable.
Open notepad and keep a record of everything you change and then if you can
reboot you will be able to put back anything that you change.
Another problem in XP is that often the BIOS reserves the IRQ which sound
cards like and sometimes need to use. For instance, my sound card is using
IRQ 21. Well, there is not an IRQ 21. XP creates virtual IRQ's as needed
creating another bottle neck. If you ever have access to a technition have
them fix this. My machine has a 3 hundred GHZ processor with an 800 FSB,
1024 of memory and 400 GHZ of disk space and usually gets along, but with
some tasks even that is not enough.
Maybe the most important thing is to run defrag and chkdsk every day. And
don't forget virus checking and spyware checking.
