I have noticed that disabling services judiciously is cheaper than adding 
more ram which may or may not fix the problem as you indicate.

I think disabling services is too dangerous to be considered good advice
for tuning.  It's much safer, if you don't have adequate memory (say 512
mb), to first add memory.  More than likely, the only thing with a high
enough priority to interrupt a sound driver so that it causes your sound
card to studder, is another device driver.  This in turn is most likely
to be the hard disk as it uses disk swapping in place of insufficient
memory.  If you do have sufficient memory, then check to see if you have
any background tasks that are disk-intensive (such as a scheduled
anti-virus check of your entire HD).
