Apologies, I'd forgotten you had at least specified the browser and JAWS
version.
I should have mentioned that when you open links in Adobe Reader
directly as you are doing, the files are opened from the browser's cache
rather than being saved to your Desktop or whatever. You have to
manually Save them from Adobe Reader if you want them saved somewhere on
your local system.
A couple possible reasons for your problem include:
1) The file is large, and Adobe is taking sometime to prepare it for
reading.
2) The file doesn't contain any text to read. (e.g. It might only have
scanned images of text).
Some other things you could try include:
1) Updating to the latest version of Adobe Reader (version 8)
2) Open Adobe Reader's options and ensure it does not try to open PDF
files as a plugin to the browser but always opens the full application
to read PDF files.
3) Trying Firefox 2.0 with the same page.
4) Viewing the source of the page, and looking at what the href for the
link to the PDF file is. Remember that ampersands in URLs are sometimes
encoded as &, so those will need to converted back to & to get the
URL for the PDF file. You could then try downloading that URL alone with
a download tool such as wget or passing it to:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/access_onlinetools.html
for conversion to text or HTML.
Again, providing a URL would make it a lot easier to diagnose what your
particular issue is. But I hope this helps somewhat anyhow.

It would be easier to debug if we knew what link on what webpage in what
browser with what version of JAWS is causing the problem.
The fact Adobe Reader is starting up immediately strongly suggests that
Vicki did not use the "Save as" option in the context menu.

However, she says below that she *has* tried right clicking on it, by
which I assume she means she got that menu and took the option to
download the file, but got these odd error messages. I have done this
sort of thing often, and never have received such messages. So I think
there's something wrong that she needs to find out, and not her
neglecting to do the right thing.
So I think rightr left clicking

Hi Vicki,
Here's an idea:
1. Tab to the link.
2. Route JAWS to PC cursor with JAWS Key + Minus.
3. Right click and choose "save as".

Subject: pdf document on website
I need to save a PDF document from a website, and can't seem to do it. It
shows up as a link, and when I either try to enter on it, spacebar, left
click or right click, I get the same message that it's an untagged
document
and needs to be prepared for reading. It also says that my assistive
technology will not work while this is being done. Then the window
closes,
and nothing happens. It's not saved, and I can't open it on the page
either.
any ideas? I'm using JAWS 8 with IE 6 and Adobe reader 7.0. Thanks.
Vicki
