Is the check box for status bar checked? Go to the view menu with alt V. Then press L for layout. Tab and make sure "status bar" is checked. Then enter for okay.
The properties of your post show you are using Outlook Express 6, but you said Outlook, could you clarify to help prevent confusion?

A few weeks ago it just slipped back into place, whatever that means. Now it is back giving me the day of the week. I went to views, unchecked the views bar and the outlook bar.
