actually i find word in xp preferable to word in office 2000, but thats
about it, the rest for most of the other applications are the same except
office 2000 power point definitely has an edge over power point in xp.
so if you want access to all the apts office 2000 seems the way to go, but
if you use mainly only word i like office xp.
the jfw support for office xp word is excellent.
xp word has more goodies and a few are nice though many are not all that
importan.
so bottomline if you have to pay hundreds of dollars to get it its not
worth it for those minor improvements.
so save your self the money and just use office 2000.
if your starting out new and only use word then office xp is a good choice.
in fact i picked it for my new system.
office xp is also a good choice if you do not use power point.
i really have very little need for power point.
realize I do not use mail merge at all so that may also be a factor in your
decission.
in a earlier message anna reported mail merge is harder in office xp.
so if your buying new it may be a good reason for picking office 2000 if
you use that feature a lot.
now a word on tutorials.
excelent tutorials exist on all the office applications for 2000 and also
word xp.
my one disappointment is that both of the power point tutorials in my view
come up short.
here is why, hundreds of background template choices exist that appear
differantly visually.
no attempt is maid to describe them, or to indicate which choice may be
best in which situation.
maybe they describe 2 of them out of hundreds.
if the authors had sought out several differant folks in differant fields
to describe why they used the layouts they use and describe some of them it
would be a big improvement.
so get a teacher and a m b A and maybe a few other folks and get feed back
on them and add that kind of info to the tutorial.

ps I am also curious as to what office 2003 has and how good the jfw
support is.
especially with respect to word.
the word in office 2003 actually has a feature worth while in the fact it
adds o c r to the package.
i am also curious does word 2003 have special dictionaries for making
corrections to spelling errors that occur due to o c r mistakes.
such dictionaries are aimed at common mistakes that often occur during
recconition stage and differ from standard spell checking programs.
if this exist in word 2003 is it accessable by jfw and does it offer
automatic correction.
