That is odd, did you hit apply before ok and closing, when you assigned the
key combo inside properties? I just recreated the steps needed and made an
icon and it comes up here with control, alt plus n, when I assign this
combo.

Chrissy:

Did that, but still no joy!

Still goes to "my computer".

After you follow the instructions on how to create a symbol for notepad on
the desktop, navigate to the icon and hit the application key. Go to
properties and assign the key combo, or else it will not recognize your
input.

I tried what you suggested below with notepad, because that's what I want to

use for brief text files, and I still end up at "my computer", when I do the

alt control N shortcut. In other words, I still end up at "my computer",
not notepad.

tom,

i just made a shortcut for word pad on my desktop and it opened the word pad
app.

throw the one for word pad away on your desktop and then go to start
programs accesseries and arrow to wordpad and hit the apps key and arrow to
send to and right arrow and arrow to desktop as shortcut and hit enter and
it is there.
