  Nope. That doesn't work. If I do it while the message is open, it says 
message cannot be deleted. If I close it and do control d it says message 
deleted, but it's still there, just like when I use the delete key alone.

    Not a cure, but you can probably delete a message with the single keystroke 
control-d. I also encounter difficulties deleting messages in OE. In my case, 
it's somehow linked to my having an Internet window open, though this, too, is 
inconsistent. Control-d usually works when the delete key won't.

    Ok. I was able to finally get rid of all the deleted messages. I still 
can't do a normal delete message though. I have to do shift delete and confirm 
in order to get rid of a message. Weird!

    Just for kicks, try this: While in the list of messages, hit alt E and then 
Y and Y again to rid yourself of deleted messages.

    I can't move messages to the deleted messages folder, but I can move them 
to other folders. I tried emptying the deleted messages folder and it won't 
work either.
