mp3 player software?

Hi,
I am going back to dog school soon, and want to take along a couple books
in digital format. Book port and Bookcourier are way over my budget, so
today I looked into mp3 players. I found one that might work, but then saw
that it comes bundled with "extensive software" My question is, has
anyone fooled around with mp3 players and their software or maybe a better
question would be will jaws most likely not be able to handle the
software? Sorry for such a basic question, but I really would like to find
a electronic device to read digital books without the high cost of book port.
