making drive letters

Can someone help me? I would like to partition my hard drive; I want to assign a drive letter to the drive so if something goes wrong on the main drive, the new drive will not be affected, and vice versa . Will you please tell me how to do that? I used to know for I assigned the letter Q to a drive on an old HP computer, which I don't have any more.

Also to you who feel that this is not Jaws related, please make believe that you didn't see this!

Thanks,

Roy Dubriel
