Gene,
I agree with you about the complexity o an undertaking such as JAWS.
I also was a COBOL and Assembler programmer for about 30 years. I
retired about a decade ago so that tells you when I started.
I was tasked with coding the telecommunications for a Burroughs computer
in the early 70s. That was long before we had any vendor supplied
software to depend on.
I was also tasked with the job of coding the VSAM routines for the
Burroughs as well as the program which kept track of file versions. You
can test as many things as you can possible imagine, turn the product
over to the testers and, by golly, on the day of implementation there
will be some idiot who manages to come up with a configuration,
situation or idea which has escaped even the wildest imagination of
everyone.
Also lots of folks need to realize that the complexity of the operating
system of today's micro is every bit as sophisticated as the operating
system of the might mainframes of a decade ago and it took a complete
department of folks to keep the mainframe running.
The fact that JAWS, Window-Eyes, HAL or other screen readers manage to
get it correct the vast majority of the time is, in my opinion,
astonishing.
This feat has nothing to do with the attitude of Freedom Scientific, it
is a reflection on the technical ability of the techies who do the grunt
work.
Freedom Scientific appears to be going the way of another computer
Goliath, IBM and we all know what happened to them.

Again I may catch hell... but I don't think a lot of you have given any
thought to the ungodly complicated affair writing a program like Jaws
is. I
am a COBOL and FORTRAN programmer, as well as doing some work in
Assembler
and C. I haven't seen the code for Jaws of course but I have a good idea
of
the complexities involved. Yes it's expensive and yes it should be as
bug
free as possible by the time we get it. But keep in mind that every
computer
system is different and that what works well on the ones at SF may not
work
so well on yours.

Gene
