I have a different idea for Mike to consider. First, I don't think saving is
the cause of the problem. Mike used to get the JAWS dictionary to work.
Besides,JAWS now prompts the user to save any changes on exiting, which I
believe it didn't do in early versions of the dictionary.

My thought is whether another step in the process is being overlooked. As we
all know, you enter the dictionary with insert-d and, if the entry is to be
global, follow with control-shift-d. JAWS brings up the "add" function, and
you press enter. either the item in question is already in the field or you
type it in. Then you tab and write in a replacement.

Now the next step is the one that may be forgotten. In order to put that
change into effect, you must press enter.

Mike, is it possible you've been forgetting to press enter there?

After that, of course, you press control-s for save and alt-F4 to exit.

Mike, Keith and anyone on this list who is using JAWS:

When you add entries to any dictionary file, using the Dictionary Manager in
JAWS, you must remember to save the file. You do this by pressing CTRL+S at
the main screen, before closing the Dictionary Manager with ALT+F4. If you
do not save your changes, before you exit the Dictionary Manager, they will
be lost/thrown away/dumped, by the Dictionary Manager. And, of course, the
time it took you to add those entries to make life easier for you, will have
been wasted.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Mike,

That is truly strange. You were invoking the default dictionary with the
Ctrl+Shift+d each time?

So in effect, your changes to the default.jdf file were not being saved?

Have you looked at the file itself in your user/settings/ENU folder to see
if the modification date is indeed changed?

It's either a problem with the dictionary manager not making the changes, or
that the file is not being saved, and that might point to a problem with
admin rights, or the wrong folder location.

And FS can't help you with it?

Hi Dave;

I couldn't add to the default dictionary most of the time. Then all of a
sudden it would work properly and then all of a suddenwham, no go!
Unfortunately the no go was more often than the go! Take care. Mike

Hi Sugar;

My issues started from day 1 of the first build/ version of J11. As they
updated J11 things seemed to get better but, although the loss of focus
doesn't happen quite as often, J11 still loses focus regularly.I have spoken
to tech support & written my complaints but, since they can't duplicate the
problem they can't or won't help. As I stated earlier this happens on more
than 1 computer & more than 1 operting system. I don't use my computer all
the heavily so I don't think it's an issue of having to many processes or
windows open. 1 other thing about J11 that I have never been able to get
answer for is the default dictionary issues I have in all builds even though
I could duplicate the problem while in a tandem session or on the phone with
tech support. Okay, enough of the rant. LOL Take care. Mike

Hi Shannon, Dave, & Chris;

I have this problem on a regular basis! For , no reason! It will happen just
by doing something as simple as clicking on something on the desktop. When I
invoke the Jaws key, windows key, + F4 keystroke, then when I try to restart
any version of Jaws with its respective hotkey, no version of Jaws will
load. I have to do a hard shutdown & reboot before I get Jaws back again. I
had this happen while I had Freedom Scientific on the phone for a different
reason and they couldn't figure out / explain why it would do this either. I
thought, at first, that I would be very happy with J12 but, it seems to be
doing the same old crap the J11 did! Losing focus & just quit working while
attempting the simplest of tasks'. I have written them & spoken with them,
to no avail. Hopefully somehow this activity, or lack of, will get cleared
up. Oh, by the way, this is happening on 2 different desktop computers
running XPSP3 Home, 1 laptop running XPSP3 Pro, & 1 desktop computer running
XPSP3 MediaCenter. Take care. Mike
