is it JAWS or my laptop?

Hi: 

I am experiencing a strange phenomenon with JAWS as I try to note down my 
speech rates for different applications. when I go into JAWS and the voice 
settings, and go to the radio button that says application microsoft word, for 
example, JAWS speaks slowly, as i would want it to, but when I tab over to see 
which rate I have it set at, it shows my default rate. so then I tab back, 
change the radio button to default, and then back to microsoft word, and as I 
tab to look at the rate again, JAWS is now speaking at my default setting. but 
when I do escape and go back in and try again, it's back to its slowness that I 
want it to be. is anyone else experiencing so much trouble just trying to see 
what the rate of speech is? I am using JAWS 8.0.432, and this seems to happen 
with all applications.
