Well, this is what I'm trying to do. I'm replacing my 20Gb hard drive with a 300Gb drive. Unfortunately, I can't back anything up to CD right now because my burner's on the blink. I've already made a slave drive out of the original 20Gb drive I had; and, it is now formatted. Any chance I could use the back up utility to put the Windows XP OS on to that slave drive and then remove the drive I'm now using as my master and then set the jumper on my new drive to cable detect (which is what Dell requires)? Not knowing your exact installation plan, I will provide here some installations tips anyway, and just in case. I have installed XP Home or Pro many times on old or fresh hard drives, and it's really unpredictable. Anything can happen during the installation. Even voice tools such as hardware synthesizers might not always help deal with unexpected situations. I'm glad to see that you're trying to do things by yourself. That's what I keep telling my trainees. There's almost no frontier when things are really accessible. Unfortunately, in this situation, we really need some sighted help because XP installation is not that easy, even for sighted professionals. By the way, what is the purpose of your installation? More space using a new hard drive, or replacing a damaged or corrupted one? If I'm facing either situation, I would do the following with a sighted friend: Intro: Have all my CDs and diskettes ready, including serial numbers and/or product keys. Run anti-virus, disk cleanup, etc, on old drive. Move my old drive Jaws authorization back to its diskette. Option 1: Use ghost (not that expensive!) to clone my current hard drive, and put the disk image on CDs. Turn off the computer, install the new hard drive as master, remove power and disk cable from old one, boot with Ghost diskette an copy CD image(s) to new hard drive. When done, remove Boot diskette, restart the computer, have a good cup of coffee and keep fingers crossed. If it works, I would re-install my old hard drive as slave, if it's worth it. Option 2: find a spot for my new drive in the chassis, set its jumper to slave, start the computer with Ghost diskette, copy from old hard drive to new hard drive. After copying, remove old hard drive or set it as slave, set the new one as master, and start the computer. You will need to re-install Jaws for either option, and maybe do the same for other programs. The whole process may take 25 to 45 minutes, if done properly. Assuming that the only speech synthesizer I have is Eloquence or some other software based speech synthesizer. I was able to re install my OS (Windows XP) over an already existing installation by removing service pack 2 first, then, choosing to install windows as a "new install advanced". At that point, I informed the dialogue that I would need accessibility to do the install. When Windows was ready, Narrator came up with the first question It needed to know. This, mind you, was on the hard drive I now have. IF I put a formatted hard drive in my system, and make it the master drive, will I at some point be able to use Narrator to install Windows? If not, is there any way to use JAWS to direct Windows to install to a second hard drive as a slave or secondary drive? Would the Windows installation program found at the jfwlite page be any good for this sort of thing?
