Matt,, thanks for this thorough explanation of your rationale for performing a Jaws repair in such a complex manner. If this actually were necessary, I'd consider it a broken function and have reported it to Freedom Scientific long ago. If you haven't already and firmly believe what you say below, I'd surely call or write FS and report what you describe to the tech Support and Development teams. In any case, I was so surprised by your explanation, myself, that I decided to do exactly as I've done to run the Jaws Repair since they changed the installer package and you no longer get it from a submenu in Start/Programs/Jaws version number, as used to be the routine. I exited all my running applications, used Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder where I keep my Jaws installation files, and focused on the file from which I installed the Jaws version I'm running at this moment. This is the filename: J9.0.2169_ILM.exe I pressed Enter on this filename. Up came the usual sequence of dialogues for the Installer, which presented the usual choices to modify or repair the current version. I chose Repair. The installer asked me the usual question as to whether I wanted to retain my personal settings or delete them, and I opted for retention. then Jaws proceeded to go through its steps of repairing itself, copying some files, doing some other things, cleaning up the backup files it had created, etc., and finally reporting that it was finished and asking if I wished to let it restart my Win XP Home SP3 computer. I responded Yes, my system rebooted, Jaws came up as a service running in the system tray as usual, and here I am. To reiterate, I have done it this way, successfully, with every version and every update since this procedure I describe became the way to run a Jaws repair, a version or two ago. No hassles. Just for contrast to the troublesome scenario you describe as requiring your very interesting, elaborate method. Again, I'm sorry you've had such an inconvenient experience, and I'd really urge you to let FS know about the problems you say caused you to resort to the method you describe. It might help them fix a bug they haven't been told about. ----- Original Message ----- From: "matt" <mcdiemert@xxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 6:52 AM Subject: RE: how do I repair jfw 9.0 Yardbird, It's been necessary to use the command line repair for jaws for the past few versions of jaws. For example if you have the jaws latest build already installed and no previous base builds it is not possible to simpley press enter on the executable and get the repair modify remove prompt rather jaws will tell you that there is already of version of jaws running on your machine, and the install wizard will exit. However, if you've started with jaws 9.0.515 and upgraded a few builds you may get the repair option however chances are it will not successfully run. Lastly, if you're running 2169 and you run a previous build to run the repair you'll get the repair option, however, this is not a proper way to run an install/ repair as you'd be repairing a current build of jaws with previous scripts and shared components. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yardbird Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 9:43 AM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: how do I repair jfw 9.0 Matt, if he knows just where that file is, and he already used it to install Jaws in the first place, why shouldn't he do what I, for instance, always do in this case? Just navigate to the file whose location he already knows, please note, and just press Enter. That's all I do. It is what you're supposed to do. Why all these steps you're describing? Are they meant to be a workaround of some sort? If so, a workaround to avoid what sort of obstacle? Are you just presupposing that the person doesn't know anything about the very file they already have used to install the program, doesn't know where it is, and that's why all this? I'm puzzled. hanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "matt" <mcdiemert@xxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 5:14 AM Subject: RE: how do I repair jfw 9.0 If you still have the executable file on your computer Move it to an easily accessed location such as the local disk c or desktop. Then press windows R for run, and shift tab to the browse button. Brows to the .exe file and press enter on it. This should place you on an open button, but we don't want to press enter just yet. Shift tab once and you'll see the path of the executable file, press the end key and then a space bar. Ttype the following /type repair Press enter, and you'll receive a dialogue asking if you want to run this file press alt r to run it and your repair is under way. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of John Miller Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2008 11:31 PM To: JFW list Subject: how do I repair jfw 9.0 Hi all, installing stuff on my new laptop and all of a sudden jaws says something about the display driver and I need to do a repair. It's jfw 9, the very latest one and I can not figure out how to do a repair on it. Can someone tell me how this is done? apparently they decided to make it harder than just running the install file again and I'm not figuring this out at all. thanks John Miller N1UMJ AIM and yahoo messenger: N1UMJ Skype: n1umjjohn -- JFW related links: JFW homepage: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Scripting mailing list: http://lists.the-jdh.com/listinfo.cgi/scriptography-the-jdh.com JFW List instructions: To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
