Hi Steven.  You can also make your power button act as a safe shutdown button 
in power management if you have a newer computer.

However, it won't work if some programs are opened or are waiting for input.  
So, you may need to use narrator and or end task.

  can anyone suggest a way to have a hotkey created that will enable me to 
press and have the pc shutdown instead of going through the start menu?

  this is mainly for when jaws stopped speaking and i have no other way to shut 
down except for pulling the power supply.
