Hello Harry,
Yes, I knew that. although sometimes it doesn't take quite as long as ten
seconds, but that's the general idea. I was asking why one statement
("here's how to set the power button to shut down if you push it while
you're computer's up and running") was then followed by the seemingly
contradictory statement "its not good to do this." I just got confused by
the seeming contradiction, and then I got flamed for asking for
clarification. From a subscriber with whom I'm on friendly, mutually
respectful terms. what fun.

You have to hold the power button in for a ten second count, then it shuts
down the computer. All you do is press the power button for as long as it
takes your computer to shut down. Holding it in for a second or two will
not do. As far as I know this method of shutting down my computer has never
harmed it.
