empty document alert in adobe reader 9

hey list! i have a nagging problem with adobe reader 9. when i open a
pdf file sometimes i get an alert empty document message even there is
text! i nead to be able to read a textbook from cisco systems! i am in
chapter 4 and tried to read to chapter for a test i have on thursday!
i get a massage that it was an image as well. i am curious as to whats
going on! i at my school named louisiana technical colledge they only
have a sheet fed scanner and tried to scan the chapter as a pdf file
but i get the same message whith the scanned file to.
