disappearing email in inbox

last nigh i did a scan disc and from windows update updated direct x 9. when i
opened my email this morning the 15 messages i had last night were gone. i have
seen this in the past after a crash and i'm really stumped. i didn't delete
them and they didn't go to any other folder. i'm running xp pro with jfw5.1
does anybody have any ideas how this would happen and if i can get the mesages
back again?
