Hi there,
In order to do that, you'll need to go to Task Manager. Press
CTRL+Alt+Delete to bring up Task Manager, then press CTRL+TAB to go to
Processes tab. Arrow through it and listen to the entries carefully. The
last thing with the number followed by the word "K" indicates its memory
usage. For example, if we want to see how much JAWS eats memory, you'll need
to find jfw.exe entry. It should look like this:
Jfw.exe System 00 24312K
Where "jfw.exe" is the name of the program, "System" is the account which
the program uses (System means the Operating System), "00" is the CPU memory
location, and the "24312K" means that JAWS is using about 24312 kilobytes of
memory (about 22 MB). If the last value (the number with the K, or mem usage
value) continuously increases without any sign of decrease, that menas that
it is using a whole bunch of memory, thereby slowing down your computer. Too
much RAM usage means that other programs does not have enough memory to
process its program requests. In order to really know if the program is
continuously using more and more memory, you'll need to monitor this value
at a regular interval (about 5 minute interval might work).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi Joseph,

Do you know, in a process of elimination, how I would go about finding the
faulty program?

Thanks,
Roger

Hi there,
Sounds like a memory leak--where a program
fails to release RAM after it has finished
with it. This sometimes happens, and the
only way to exit this dilema is to uninstall
the offending program (too many anti-spyware
programs may slow your computer; one is
fine).
Cheers,
Joseph
