clearing things up, once and for all!!! was Re: JAWS patch

Hi. To answer the questions below...

Question: I got the patch, or space saver, or what ever that was. My confusion comes from, who is this from?

Answer: We don't really know, but it was sent to a whole lot of people, we know that for sure.

Question: Why would freedom scientific send me something having to do with downloading files? Answer: Freedom Scientific most definitely did not send this file out. This was sent by an individual, completely outside the company, probably with an axe to grind. It is most definitely not safe to install and should be gotten rid of as soon as is humanly possible. If you look back at all the previous versions of JAWS. It would be nearly impossible to send patches or updates to users via e-mail. If there's an update to JAWS, the best place to get it from is from the Freedom Scientific website, or with later versions of JAWS, you can update through the "check for updates" feature.

Question: so, can anyone tell me, who the file is from, weather its safe to install, or if anyone has?

Answer: Again, I personally don't know who sent the file out, and as was stated above, don't install this file. I believe a few people have and it's some kind of nasty trojan program. and those are most definitely not safe.

Question: lastly, I guess I am wondering whom gave permission to this person to add the file to our list to send us? Answer: this is just a guess, but this individual probably just gathered a bunch of e-mail addresses and decided to send this file out to everyone, in hopes that he would catch a few people unawares and mess up their lives. sSadly, a few people did and unfortunately, I don't know how to help them remove the virus or trojan or whatever the hell this thing actually is supposed to be. Bottom line, keep your antivirus software up-to-date, and if you ever receive an e-mail from anyone with any kind of attachment that claims to be an update to JAWS, the smartest thing you can do is to stay far, far away from it.
Just delete the e-mail and don't concern yourself with it. If there are any updates, the Freedom Scientific website will tell you the real story. Freedom Scientific will occasionally send out a message mentioning that a new version of JAWS is available. But they will always send you to a website to get more information and give you the option to download the updated version. Another big clue that this was suspect is that the sender of the file used the file sharing website called Send Space. http://www.sendspace.com and uploaded it there. Freedom Scientific staff have since contacted Sendspace and the offending file has been removed. So if you receive a link to download *anything* having to do with updating JAWS, but it doesn't come from Freedom Scientific itself, stay away from it, because more likely than not, it's probably something that you don't want to have on your computer. I hope this explains everything as best as I can, and will finally end this thread.
