I think XP also comes with it's own backup software, and I think there's freeware out there for backing up as well. The nice thing about those external USB one touch drives is that you don't even need to use software to start the backup, just press a button on the drive. You've got a slightly different choice for a large external disk if this appeals to you. I recently bought what's generically known as network attached storage. It's a hard drive with an Ethernet, rather than a USB, interface. The advantage is that it can be shared by 2 or more pcs, even a Mac and a pc. To be shared it does require a home LAN, but they can be nice when you want the equivalent of a file server that's always on, never going up and down to be rebooted, and available over night for automated backups. I bought the SimpleTech SimpleShare (I think that's the drive's name anyway). Since it's on the LAN, it can be stored in the closet with the router, and if you've got a WIFI router, you can access it via WIFI. It looks to the system like any other networked pc.
