To solve that system tray problem, hit the start menu key, then escape to focus on the start button. Now hit alt-enter for task bar and start menu properties. Tab to the last check box in the dialog, which is something to the effect of Hide Inactive Icons. It is probably checked on your system, and needs to be unchecked. then magically the volume control and other items will work as they should.
