Hi Ryan,

It was just a fun sort of idea, to get Jaws to speak foreign words in their
own languages. Although it does seem it ought to be possible. I know-- if I
knew how to encode a portion of text with the markers that would be a
language signal to Jaws, the way, if you have that feature set in
Configuration Manager, when it encounters a British Web site or email, it
starts reading with an English accent, and so forth, then I could edo this.
But I don't know what sort of cue it is that Jaws picks up on in those
situations.

Anyway, not important. Not an "issue" that needs to be "resolved." Just a
wish.

Thanks again.

Hi Yardbird,

Glad I was able to help and you got things working the way you want.

As fir your question about getting the Spanish voice to read Spanish words,
I don't really know of a way to do this. About the only thing I can think of
is to use the alternate say all command (alt insert down arrow). This won't
just read the one word you want, but will start a say all command using
whatever voice you have defined to do an alternate say all. Other than that,
I really can't figure out a way to do what you want.

Regards,
Ryan

Ryan,

Thanks for telling me. I wouldn't have guessed, because there isn't any
other application in which I was interested for this purpose. But no hassle.

I don't mind doing it in the default file. That's fine. Thanks for your
patience and effort. Let me go try it...

Success. In order to get the key combo I really wanted for finger
convenience (Insert control S), I had to delete that keystroke from Set
Synthesizer, but as I've used only Eloquence for years, I don't expect to
need to change my synth on the fly. And I tested it to see if it took, and
it did. Whew. That was not something I could have figured out on my own,
I'll tell ya! Sure, I understood all along that I'd have to go into Keyboard

Manager, didn't need to be told that. But only you figured out that it
wasn't true that I could restrict the change only to the word.jkm file, or
that I'd not even find the function listed there.

Well, this is going to be handy for proofreading things I write with a lot
of foreign language words and phrases set off in italics, another method
besides just poking through everything just stopping all the time and using
Insert F, character by character. Which still will have its uses, of course.

But this is really cool. Now if only I could figure out how to invoke my
Spanish voice to read the Spanish words, which I type using proper symbols
and all that. You happen to know? Or, as I surmise from something I read in
the course of all this, you can only set these scheme voices to high or low
or something like that? Sorry for going stupid. I was working all day before

I got into this inspired by your advice, and now my brain is totally burned
out, at least for Jaws.

Thanks again, Ryan.

Hi Yardbird,

It appears that, in Jaws 8, the "select a scheme" script is only available
in the default keyboard file. It is not in the Microsoft Word keyboard file.
If you want to change that Alt insert S keystroke, you are going to have to
do it in the default keyboard file. Unfortunately, there is no other way
around this unless you want to copy the "select a scheme" script from the
default file to the Word keyboard script file. If you are not familiar with
modifying script files, I would simply make the change in the default file.
That way, if you are running another program and decide to want to change a
scheme, the new keystroke you define will be available to you.

I know you wanted this change only to take effect for Word, but there is no
easy way to do that short of modifying script files.

Ryan,

Well, I returned to the list in keyboard manager for Word (not Word 2007,
which is one of two alternatives to the default Word selection) and looked
up and down it, both by pressing the letter s and just by arrowing. No luck.

There are plenty of set this, set that lines, but not this one.

If it helps for me to say this, I'm using Word 2000 with the latest, or
second latest Jaws 8 . By second latest, I mean 8.0.1163 Unicode. I don't
know why it just said "unicode." But that's what it said, and I'm reporting
faithfully.

any idea why I can't find this option in my keyboard manager list for Word?

Hi,

If you look at my message again, you need to find a script in the keyboard
manager called "select a scheme". That is the script that is assigned to the
key combination Alt insert S. From your message, it appeared that this was
the keystroke you wanted to change.

If you only want to change this keystroke from one particular program like
Microsoft Word, open Word and then invoke the keyboard manager and look for
the script "select a scheme". You can then change the Alt control S
keystroke to something easier for you to use. If you want this keystroke to
be applied in all programs, you have to load the default file by pressing
control shift D when you open the keyboard manager.

Once you do this, you can invoke the change schemes list box by using the
keystroke you entered in the keyboard manager.

I hope this is clear and it will do what you want to do.

Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I do not want to change the key command for the Say Font script, nor would I

apply the change I am looking for globally to all applications. This thread
began with a discussion of how to invoke the speech and sounds menu with a
hotkey in order to make Jaws speak various attributes in different voices.

Let me be clear once more. I do know that This function can be either
invoked by this particularly inconvenient hotkey key combination (insert alt

s) or, as if often the case with Jaws, by going into configuration manager,
settings, speech and sounds, and setting it there. But that's not much fun
if you just want to activate this function temporarily and then turn it off.

Now, I hope that clarified what the original topic was. It wasn't about
Insert F. There is nothing inconvenient about Insert F. I was not trying to
learn how to change that. And, if I go to the keyboard manager looking in
the Word area for a keystroke for this purpose, either it's not in the list,

or I need to know the name it's been given for that list, which must be
pretty counter-intuitive, I'd say. That is what I'm looking for, a way to
change Insert Alt S to something else.

Thanks very much for responding.

Hi,

To do what you want to do, open the keyboard manager and then load the
default keyboard file by pressing control shift D.

Next, find the script "select a scheme" and change the key to whatever you
want as outlined in the previous message about the say font script.

I hope this helps,
Ryan

Dear Evangeline,
I'm sorry, but it seems I may not have expressed myself clearly enough. I do

not wish for another way to invoke the Say Font command. Insert F is
perfectly convenient and I use it frequently. The keystroke I wished to
change is the one that invokes the sounds and schemes dialogue from which
you can choose one of many ways to make Jaws automatically speak font
changes as it reads, or speak the text in different voices for different
character formatting, such as bold or italic. That keystroke is Insert alt
S, and without instruction from a Yoga master, I can't see how I can learn
to stretch my right hand that far without using my other hand to place my
little finger on Insert and my thumb on the alt key, and then use my left
hand finger to press the S key. This is quite a trick of contortion. so I
wish I could change this to something easier. But if it is also in the
keyboard manager list, I can't figure out how to find it, or what it's
called.

I hope this is more clear.

Thanks very much.

The first thing to do is you go to the keyboard manager. Then locate
the dessired application that you want to change. So for example
microsoft word. Then go to the next pane by pressing tab. Then locate
the dessired keystroke you want to change, as you mentioned say font.
After that, as you are locating the dessired keystroke you heard the
asigned key right! After you hear the asign key for say font, press
tab for you to go to the asign hotkey. That's now the time you can
change the hotkey asign to it. After you change the default hotkey,
press tab to go to the ok button. That's also the time the JAWS
setting will now accept the new hotkey. I hope this will help you.
I'm very sorry for the confusing words. If you still have questions,
just ask me and I will answer you as soon as I can.
