Hi George and all,

Yes, I was a programmer. I started out doing old S/360 assembler language. George and some others will recognize this as very old mainframe programming.

I used the IBM 3278 talking terminal then moved to the PCSaid program which ran under DOS. I also used IBM's ScreenReader/2 which ran under the OS/2 operating system. I next moved to the Jaws 3.0 screen reader and have stayed with Jaws since.

I do very little programming now but I still use Jaws extensively. I am coming up on my 29th year with IBM. They have been very good about seeing to it that i had the screen reader I needed. I wish all others had had the same blessing.

Enjoy the retirement George. ;-))

Hi Dan:
I take it you were a programmer, so was I. I also used the IBM 3278, for maybe close to two years. It worked reasonably well. The school board replaced all the 3278 terminals with PC's and purchased TSI's Vertsoft for me. I used that untill HJ came out with JAWS for DOS and finally to JAWS for Windows. We have came a long ways from JAWS 1.0 for windows.

Hi Ben,

The first screen reader application I used was an old IBM 3278 green screen monitor that was modified with electronics to do screen reading. It used an old Votrax synthesizer which was almost as big as the monitor itself.

I then moved to IBM's PCSaid screen reader.

Things were much more of a challenge in those days.

Hello all,

Without getting off topic regarding Jaws, I'd be interested to know what
your first memories of screen readers are. Mine begin with Jaws 3.2 on an old Gateway PC back in 1997. Good oal Doubletalk PC couldn't even handle the
Romance languages for heaven's sake!

Thanks,

Ben
