Hello Judith,

Which list did you unsubscribe from?

Take care,

John

I agree that it is not a big deal unless you are the person who responded
properly, unsubscribed from the list where all the problems emanated and
couldn't re-subscribe because somehow you were still the bearer of spam or
some other evil commodity.

John,

Let me explain something. There is no reason for anyone to feel insulted by
any of this.

First of all, it's either when you are just corresponding with someone,
either privately or through a mailing list, for the first time, that you may
receive an email response like this can happen, simply because the spam
filter set up (usually by that person's ISP, not by them personally) of
course doesn't recognize your address and is asking only this: Please
respond as suggested so that this logarithm (the code that looks for
suspicious emails) can know that you are a real human source of email sent
here,, not an automated emailing service.

Second, if you reply as requested, your address is *not* added to some list
of emails that can be used improperly. It isn't that kind of list. It's a
list that tells the spam filter that the email isn't bogus. This isn't some
sort of mailing list that someone's going to use to send you a virus, or
spam, or something like that. You see? It's called an "allow" list, and no
one is looking at it or doing nasty things with it. It's not like having
your address or phone number on a list that results in you getting phone
calls from your local Sheriff's department asking for contributions, or from
someone selling aluminum siding, or anything. It's simply not the kind of
list you may be imagining. It's a list looked at by a program, in this case
a spam filtering program. Harmless. Impersonal. Isn't going to be used in
any way at all.

Maybe no one has explained this? maybe no one has understood it when it
*has* been explained? Better yet, what are people actually so exercised
about? Can anyone responsibly explain this, why the discussion didn't stop
as soon as someone, whether myself or someone else, explained that it's not
a big deal? Honestly, it's all good. It's not a problem. It's too bad we
have such a big spam problem the past couple years, and it's too bad people
often feel so insulted, inconvenienced or threatened by this type of
preventive measure, but that's how things are, these days. So it's a
moment's annoyance. No big deal. Curse the spammers for making such
protective things be invented, don't curse some ISP that's just helping
their customer feel safe. Not worth all this agonizing.

Hello Yardbird,

I am not sure what everyone else is concerned about, but for me personally,
anytime I get those spam filter emails-especially from people I do not even
know-I don't allow my email address to be added to that person's list. I
don't know about the on or off topic issue, other than to say that because
the email was posted to the list, it has sparked a lot of discussion.

Take care,

John

Hi folks,

I'm surprised to see that, something like what must be a week after I posted
a message explaining that this was a common automatic spam protection that
is not bogus in any way, nor harms anything if you just comply with the
instruction to reply to the email so that the filter will put your email
address on the person's "white" list or Allowed list, people have kept
discussing it with, judging from the subject lines of some posts,
considerable anxiety, suspicion and resentment (e.g., the below comment).
Let me repeat that what I've just said is all there is to it,it's not a big
hassle, not difficult to comply with, totally harmless, not aimed at you
personally, and everybody should just let it go after doing what that
message asks. It is nothing to get worried about, or paranoid about, or
still confused about. Maybe some listers just haven't seen my earlier
explanation or other posts that must also have explained this issue
accurately, but please be reassured that it's not anything to keep worrying
over as if it were a technical problem or an accusation against you
personally. And, though I'm not of a very strict mind about what's on
topic, so long as it's via Jaws that we're looking at something, and
wondering what to do with it or how to navigate or perform a task, this is
really not a Jaws issue at all. Just an ordinary Internet thing. So it
would really be nice to just let it go, at this point. Everything will be
fine. Don't worry.

She can just add this jfw list to her white list, which will permit all
messages sent to this list to go through, if that is what is desired.

Why bother, it is she who is at a loss when not getting all the messages.

I responded to it twice and got another list of incomprehensible list of
steps I had to go through to become approved. I unsubscribed from the list
and when I get confirmation that I'm unsubscribed I'll sign up again.
