I remember that.  I also remember people raising 41 varieties of cane

John and list,
At one time, Windows XP required you to 
reactivate with Microsoft if the same thing 
happened.  This applied mostly to retail 
version (not VLK version).  As someone said, 
get a USB dongle.  That's the only way to go.
