There is a check box for hiding unused icons that is found in the "taskbar" tab
of the "Start menu and task bar" property dialog box. Just uncheck it and
select ok.
For those who have a zillion items in their systray and wish to keep the check
box checked. You can tab just past the check box to the custom button. The
custom selection allows you to navigate through a list of the icons in the
systray and select to hide, hide always, or always show.
Now, navigating through this list is a little unordinary, so I will give some
instruction below.
First, get to the list to change with the instructions above.
Step 2. Down arrow into and through the list. JAWS will speak the item in the
list and its status in the combo box to the right.
Step 3. Right arrow into the combo box of the item you wish to change.
Step 4. Up and down arrow through the choices to your desired selection
Step 5. Left arrow back into the list of systray items.
Step 6. Down arrow to continue through the list, if need be.
Step 7. Repete process for each item needing a change.
Step 8. Tab to the ok button and press enter.
Hope this helps.

Ok folks. Ran into the same problem. Windows XP has a setting for hiding
those icons not used for a while that are in the systray. Given all that
everyone has explained, I think this is the problem. Now, this is what we need
to turn off. Microsoft is trying to help us again.

Hi Dana,
I don't think it is a problem with Jaws necessarily.
There may be a valid reason for it, or just one of those quirky things about
computers.
I would just let it go for now, and place a shortcut for it where you
wantit.
As long as you can access the volume control, it really doesn't matter how.

I think that is probably the best solution, and what I will probably fall
back on as a final solution. But I sill wish I could figure out why the icon
in the system tray just isn't being pick up by JAWS. Does this indicate
something wrong with JAWS, or my configuration, or should I just forget
about it; I guess that's what bothering me most.
Blessed Be,
Dana
