Hi All,

It looks like FS has largely been able to solve my problem with
JFW 6.0 on my XP Home machine being too chatty when I hit Windows
key-M or Win Key-D to go to my desktop.

JAWS is still saying Desktop Folder View List view and the name of
the item on my desktop, but it is a vast improvement on what it was
saying and I can live with the "extra" folder view" if I can't get rid
of it.

Here's the response I received from FS:

Dear Margaret

Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support. You
will
want to use the settings below for windows xp:

1. minimize all applications (windows key+m)
2. Unselect the item if it's checked (control+spacebar)
3. Activate the context menu (windows application key)
note: this is the key to the left of the right control key on
standard
windows keyboards.
4. Press the letter r to activate the display properties
5. on the Themes Page:
set to windows xp.
To change press alt plus down arrow to open
6. Control Tab to the Desktop Tab
Set background to bliss
Set position stretch
7. Press Control Tab to Screen Saver
Set to none]
8. Control Tab to Appearance Tab
Set to Windows Classic Style
Color Scheme Windows Standard
Font Size Normal
9. Control+tab to the settings tab,
color: 16 bit
resolution: 1024 by 768
10. Tab to okay and hit enter

Suggestions for setting up folders in Windows XP
1. Hold down the Windows key and press the letter M to get to the
desktop.
2. Press M for my computer and press Enter.
3. Press Alt plus t and up arrow to Folder Options and press Enter.
4. When on the general tab, set tasks to use Windows Classic Folders.
Set to Open folders in the same Window.
5. Tab to OK and press Enter.

If you continue to have too much speaking, you can change the
verbosity
level with the steps below:

1. Activate the configuration manager "insert+number row 6"
2. Load the default.jcf file "control+shift+d"
3. Pull up the set options menu "alt+s"
4. Press the letter v to open the verbosity dialog
5. Arrow down to the desired verbosity level
6. Tab to okay and hit enter
7. Save the change "control+s"
8. Exit the manager "alt+f4"

In some cases, it is necessary to restart JAWS to notice the change
with
this setting.

Previously I wrote:

I'm hoping I can get JAWS 6.0 to be less verbose with Windows XP
Home when I hit Windows key-M or Windows key-D to get to My Desktop.
With the former, JFW says "Folder View List View" and reads the names
of several items on my Desktop such as My Documents, Outlook Express,
etc. JAWS 6.0 was better behaved on my Win 98 se machine and just
said something like "My Computer" or "My Desktop." When I hit Windows
key-D, JAWS reads several items in my Desktop and it's almost as
annoying.

I thought maybe I could quiet it down by using the steps for
getting rid of the infamous "Read only edit" and look for "folder
view" instead of "Read only edit," but I don't find "Folder View" in
the list view that "Read only edit" is in. I did find "Desktop Speak
Control Type Using NormalVoice " which sounds promising, but I wanted
to double check before I went ahead and did it.

Will this do the trick or is there another setting somewhere that
should be changed?

    Thank you,
