Personaly I would suggest using Excel rather thna Word because there are some very useful, but simple ways to sort and find things, do equations such as averages, or how many occurances of a particular name, etc.

Yes, you could use Excel to do this. What you're describing is essentially a small database, so you could also use a table in MS Word, or a database package such as Access. My guess is that you'll have to learn one of these, and you'll get the most use out of learning MS Word, so I'd suggest you get a book on Word and start learning about it, and tables specifically.
