Your problem maybe with Norton anti Virus and Word. The problem you are
having sounds similar to the one described below.
Follow the steps shown below and you should be able to read your Word
documents.
Be sure to re boot your computer after you do the steps below.
I got this information from the JFWLITE list when it existed.

If you are unable to read a word document with standard Windows navigation
and use Norton Anti-virus, you may need to disable the Microsoft Office
Plugin
of Norton Anti-Virus.

Follow these steps:
List of 7 items
1. Open Norton Anti-Virus
2. Press ENTER on the "options" button,
3. Select the antivirus options
4. TAB to "Miscellaneous"
5. Route JAWS to PC and left click the "Miscellaneous" button.
If necessary use the JFW cursor to locate the "Miscellaneous" button, then
use the left mouse button to click on the "Miscellaneous" button.
6. TAB to "Enable office plug-in" and uncheck it with the SPACEBAR
7. TAB to "OK" and press the SPACEBAR
list end

Subject: Unchecking boxes on the menu bar

> Jaws 4.51 makes a real hash of reading word documents. As long as I
haven't pressed a key, it will read the text, but as soon as I have the
unmitigated gall to type as much as one letter, it gives up. If I press
insert down arrow for "Say all" it will read, but the up and down cursor
keys just produce blank--blank--blank ad nauseam and finitum.
> I have a suspicion, and I may be well astray of the mark, that unchecking
the print layout box may have the desired effect of having jaws read the
text, as I have paid it to do! However, how does one remove the tick?
Pressing the spacebar won't do it!
