I happen not to feel inconvenienced in a practical way by this feature of
Jaws, although I find it kind of absurd. Maybe it's a matter of how you
define things. But to me, an "edit" field isn't simply one in which text
appears, it's one where you are *invited* to enter or revise text. That's
pretty simple, I think, unless the definition of the word "edit" and the
phrase "edit field" have changed while my back was turned. I have a
suspicion that someone in this case has decided, or maybe this has been
happening for awhile among programmers and such without my being aware of
it, that "edit field" now will mean "a field in which text has previously
been entered, or could be entered, or could or could not be revised. Notice
will be posted as to which type of edit field this particular one is."

Does anyone happen to know if this hypothetical scenario at least resembles
the actual situation? In other words now there can be an "edit field" in
which editing is forbidden or impossible? What an Orwellian world of
language twisting.

I can't elaborate on why this should even be necessary,
because I simply don't know!
However, I can tell you this, in prior versions of Jaws,
at least on my machine, there are edit fields in some applications, that
cannot be edited by the user.
In those cases, Jaws would simply say edit, and read the imformation in
that particular field.
Now, in at least Jaws 5.0 and up, when one of these fields is encountered,
Jaws will say, "read only edit", alerting the user to the fact that this
field contains imformation which cannot be edited.
One instance that comes to mind, is the eula, "end users license agreement",
which is encountered in the installation of some software.
In this instance, if I used the down arrow to read thru the agreement, I
would just get the text of the agreement.
But, if I used the tab key, I would hear multiple edit fields reported by
Jaws.
Now as to the accuracy of this feature, I can't say, since I have never had
a problem with it,
but then again all software doesn't react the same on every machine.
HTH,
Ricque

I'm not clear about the purpose of Jaws speaking "read only edit," but my
impression is that it's supposed to be a practical, useful message. Doesn't
it indicate that you're in a field where information has been entered but
which you aren't permitted to type or delete anything, yourself? If so, is
the message always accurate?

I can't know whether to consider this message such an annoyance as some of
you feel it is until I know what it's trying to alert me to.

thanks.

Hi Curmudgeon,
Thanks for that!
Haven't played with version 5 enough to know that you could ignore the read
only edit message.

I tried this and it did not work.
My problem may not be with "tutor" messages.
The first time I open a message in my e mail, I hear JAWS say "read
only edit".
This usually occurs when there is a blank space somewhere. The second time I
read the message, I do not hear JAWS say its thing.

Thanks for the input.
