Chris,

Found wordpad in windows\system32.

However there's no ribbon there. What version of wordpad are you using, or
is this a Windows 7 installation?

It looks as if where JAWS says, "application menu drop down" is where
the quick access toolbar can be located and used. Since I used Wordpad
as an example I cannot edit the Quick Access Toolbar in this application.

Chris,

Excellent. A better introduction to the Virtual Ribbon than any I've read
so
far.

Now the real question: How do you edit the Quick Access Tools using the
virtual ribbon?

On/Off in JAWS 12

Hi all.
Let me have a go at explaining what this a significant feature to me.
Virtual Ribbon menu simplifies ribbon navigation by simulating a menu
system inside of the ribbon, hence "virtual ribbon menu". So, for example:
1. Open an Office 2007 or 2010 program. If not and you use Windows 7
open WordPad or Paint. Or open any other application that uses the
Microsoft Ribbon.
2. Assuming you have turned this new feature on, press the alt key. You
will hear JAWS say, "virtual ribbon", followed by the first item in the
ribbon, usually the home tab. Think of this as the menu bar.
3. Use your left and right arrow keys to navigate this imaginative menu
bar.
4. Once you have located an item of interest, press enter or down arrow
or tab to move to the lower ribbon.
5. From this point, you can use your up and down arrows much like you
would a traditional menu system. Because the lower ribbon contain
groups, JAWS will always say, "submenu". To open this "submenu", use the
right arrow or enter key.
6. At this point you will be able to use your up and down arrow keys to
navigate the "menu" for that "submenu".
7. Once you find something you wish to change, press enter. (Note for
edit boxes, use alt+down arrow to "open it", type a value, then use
alt+up arrow to "close" it.)
8. The next time you open the virtual ribbon, JAWS remembers the last
item you landed on.
9. To go back to the main lower ribbon, use left arrow or escape.
10. You can also use first letter navigation (Microsoft Ribbon keyboard
shortcuts will not be available when virtual ribbon menu is enabled) to
navigate the upper/lower ribbon.
So let's give an example. Say you wish to disable the ruler in Windows 7
Wordpad. To do this, with virtual ribbon menu enabled:
a. Press alt.
b. Move to the view tab with right arrow or press the letter v.
c. Move to the show or hide submenu with the up and down arrow keys, or
press s.
d. Press right arrow to open the submenu.
e. Move to the ruler check box with up and down arrow keys, or press r.
f. The virtual ribbon closes and you return to your document.
g. When you go back in, notice how JAWS remembers you were in the ruler
option?
Anyway, I hope this all helps.

I didn't see anything in the "What's New" documents on this so thought I
should share

Ctrl+F1 will turn your virtual ribbon on/off dynamically (meaning right
now). In case you got caught like I did when pressing things willy-nilly.

This is actually nice because if you do have an issue with the QAT and
need
to customize it, I think the only way you can navigate to the QAT
customize
is with the virtual ribbon turned off.

Just thought you all should know.
