Something about this update/upgrade thing. It's a distinction that GW Micro uses, but I have not seen FS make that distinction. To the best of my understanding, FS tends to use upgrade to describe all version changes, but they use the term major and minor upgrades. JFW 4, 4.5, 5, I think 5.1, and 6 were major uppgrades, i.e. required a SMA. 4.01, 4.02, 4.51, and 6.1 (and 6.2 from what I understand) are minor upgrades. FS doesn't exactly follow a patern with version numbers.

Hello Jim:

Swap the letter A as in "a upgrade" for the word an as in "an
upgrade".

The way that you are using the letter A in your messages, makes the
upgrade sound as if an upgrade is an indefinite article, which it is
not.

No this is not true
It is not always true that a update must be free. A update is always a
major version change from 6 to 7 an update it a change in the point it
has nothing to do with the cost of the program.

With previous versions of jaws, e.g. 3.5 to 3.7.x or 4.0.x to 4.5.x, an upgrade was one where the number behind the period changed. It was only with jaws 5.x and 6.x that an upgrade was a change from 5.x to 6.x and now from 6.x to 7.x.

I think it depends on the companies policcy and version numbering. An
upgrade counts against a sma, a minor update does not.

Doris

Hi,
A upgraid in software terms is when the version number it self before
the point changes so a upgrade is 6 to 7. A update on a program is
anything that causes the version number after the point to change so a
update is 6.0 6.1 and so on Hth

Hi Margaret,

Just read Eric's own message here, giving the details of changes in the

update. Why is everyone discussing this in the first place? Weeks
ago,

someone mentioned that an update would soon be coming out, and that
Eric had announced it at a convention. This was very clearly the
announcement of an
interim update, which is a regular sort of thing. I believed it and
didn't
give it another thought until the list became alive with rumors and
questions, back and forth. This could have been due to only two
things.

One, maybe people aren't reading their list messages. Two, maybe some people don't know the difference between the terms "update" and "upgrade."

They are not synonyms. They don't mean the same thing. An update is a

free modification to the current version of the program. An upgrade is

a new

version or new release, whichever term you prefer.

Hope this helps.

During the next two weeks, we will post another Free Update for JAWS 6.x users. This will be version 6.2 and in addition to many requested fixes, it will offer the ability to let a PAC Mate user control their PC and Desktop JAWS. This will include Keyboard in put, synthesizer, and Braille output all from the PAC Mate BX or QX models. There will be

more details on this shortly.

Following that, will be an SMA release in September. This will be the
version 7.0. Regards, Eric
