I've seen this happen when a crash has occurred, but I know that's
little help. I don't think it's sound that's gone, I think everything
is gone when that happens.

Subject: Sound goes away
I have narrator loading at startup on a Windows XP system I just
installed, and I get sound from Windows on startup, and Narrator comes
up talking. After saying "Foreground Win", Narrator goes silent.
No wave sounds play even though none of the mute buttons are
checked in Volume control, and all sound drivers are installed.
I can't install speech until I get this fixed. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dennis Brown
