Well, why bother deleting them in the first place? Is it so much of a
hassle to leave a few messages you've read and want to see again right in
your Inbox? Is that a real problem?

Yardbird,
There is a similar function in Outlook as well. I just don't want to have
numerous emails that I know I will not revisit clogging up my deleted items
folder making it more difficult for me to cycle through the ones that i
might want to revisit.

I keep wanting to mention this, as I've begun to suspect that maybe some
people aren't aware of this feature of Outlook Express. It can be set to
automatically clean out your Deleted Items folder when you close the
program. For me, this has always been sufficient, and from the discussion
I've been reading here today, it sounds as if maybe that would be a relief
to know for others, as well, the only real reason I can imagine wishing to
double delete an email message right during that same session with Outlook
Express would be if you're trying to hide it from someone, or something like
that. Which I'm sure isn't why everyone's asking how to empty that folder.
I think they think it'll just keep growing if they don't do housekeeping on
it, or prevent things from even going into it.
Here is the routine, for anyone interested.
First, of course make sure you have no open messages; many of the OE menus
show different options and items depending on context, like whether you're
in an open message or not.
Okay. Go to Tools, then up arrow a couple of times so that you come up from
the bottom of the menu to Options. You can just hit O, too, though if there
are more than one item beginning with a highlighted O, you'll have to press
O until you get to Options. I forget.
Hit enter. Now, options is a dialogue with multiple tabs, each of which
contains settings for a different function. One for reading messages, one
for composing them, and so forth. Press control tab to circulate through
the tabs until you come to Maintenance. Hit Enter.
Tab once, and the first item you'll come to will say, more or less, Clean up
Deleted Items folder upon Exit, and you'll hear Jaws say whether it's
checked or unchecked. If you want to automatically empty your Deleted Items
folder each time you exit Outlook Express,press the space bar and hear the
item state change to "checked."
Now tab until you come to the OK button, hit enter, and this will close the
entire Options section and the Tools menu.
