It works fine for me. I can highlight three messages on this inbox and using 
Insert-Shift-down arrow, hear all three of the message subjects.

Alice, I wonder if you need to adjust your verbosity settings in the 
configuration manager. I think you have some control over whether you speak 
all selected items or just first and last.

If not that, then are your files contiguous (not separated by un-selected 
files?

If you're talking about email messages, you can only select one message at a
time.
