When I read the status line it tells me how many items, then how many
unread.

If you needed a count of how many unread messages (separate from how
many total messages), I guess you would have to change your current view
to just unread messages, get the count I described, then if you needed
to, go back to the view showing all messages.
I have mine sorted by subject and my show six items 5 unread.  So I am
not sure why a user would have to do what you describe above. =20
