Victor, if it helps any, I purchased a book from Amazon, Lance Armstrong's
"It's not about the bike", and found out it wasn't accessible. Although
they grumbled at having to do it, they eventually did give me my money back.
Your best bet might be to contact the publisher and find out if the book is
accessible before you purchase it.

Victor honestly it all depends on the book. Some e-books are completely
accessible and read like any other PDF file. Some are encrypted for
security reasons and can't be read by a screen reader. I suppose the theory
is that a screen reader interfaces with the text in such a way it would be
as if a sighted user could "copy and paste" it. Make sure you are using the
latest version of the acrobat reader version 7.07 to get the best results,
which has tried to address some of these security issues. This is what
the jaws help system says about adobe reader and this issue.
The accessibility of a PDF file depends on how the document was authored.
While JAWS makes PDF documents far more accessible than ever before, some
files may still not read properly. Information on authoring accessible PDF
documents is available at http://access.adobe.com/
