RE: Problems with windows XP SP2 and my lap top.

And I'm afraid mine was fixed by rerunning the wireless networking
wizard.  This evidently opened up some needed ports which the newly
installed xp sp2 firewall had closed.

Alternatively, if this isn't it, some laptop manufacturers provide their
own software to help you "Manage" your wireless connections.   This is
usually a separate application, not just the card driver.  IBM calls
theirs IBM Access Connections.  In the case of an IBM thinkpad, this
software automatically disables the Windows service for controlling
wireless connections (called Wireless0 I think) and handles these
connections itself.  Unfortunately, it didn't play well with the xp sp2
firewall, so I disabled it ( the application from IBM I mean), then I
had to go and find how to re-enable Windows control of my wireless
connections.

I don't remember exactly where I found it; I had to go into control
panel | network connections | wireless connections and somewhere in
there is a check box that says "let windows manage my wireless
connections" or something very close.  I had to check it.

After I had done that, I ran the windows wireless connection wizard and
finally all worked again.

I have to admit that Windows didn't offer as many options as the IBM
Access Connections utility, but it seemed to be the quickest way to get
things working for me again, so that's what I did.
