Jed,
Open the View menu and make sure Status Bar is checked (Alt + V,
UpArrow).
Maximise the window (Alt + SpaceBar, X).
Move to the Contacts folder and press Insert + PageDown to read the
status line - are you still not getting anything?

That's the problem, it's not saying it at all.

Tab until you hear address book and as it reads it it should announce
how
many addresses you have, if you miss it the first time press insert plus
the
tab key and it will announce it again. Hope this helps.
