OE message list

I find JFW 6x doesn't read the message list in Outlook Express well. It
seems to default to trunkating the data and adding dot dot dot if it is
long. So a message might sound like "word urgent help ple... Vy" instead of
"Word urgent help please! Vy Pham"
Outlook Express uses tool tips to expand columns in the list when they are
not visible. This is a setting in OE options: "Show ToolTips in the message
list for clipped items".
I am trying to use the JAWS "Customize List view" option to make these lists
speek properly. I have two problems with this method. 1: The settings
don't stick from one session to another or even from one message folder to
another. 2: After making changes, some of the message flags such as
"unread" aren't spoken any more.
I have the latest build of 6.1 running Win98se, 16bit high color 1024x768
resolution.
