Gene, Thanks for your response. As I said in my message, its the key combo you mention that I know already how to use. it does not work now. As for the foreign pronunciation setting, I've got it turned on by default and it turns itself on when I'm at a Web site iyr where some of the text is encoded in the other language. Jaws recognizes this and proceeds to speak in that language until the coding that kicked it off stops, then it reverts to English. This hasn't got to do with spelling and accents, but with special foreign language coding. Two different things.difrer3ndidffespellijng However, this is Word 2000 we're talking about . Just would prefer to type the occasional foreign word and phrases accurately, if only for the sighted reader. My complaint that I couldn't fool Jaws into saying something correctly by screwing around with its spelling in the midst of my email was facetious. That's not the problem. I can live without a foreign worked speaking properly in Jaws. I just want to produce it correctly. I'm partial, was fully sighted, and I want things to look right in general, whether or not a person using adaptive technology can hear them spoken correctly. I, for one, just compensate in my mind for jaws reading a foreign word or name incorrectly. I flinch and then say the word or name properly in my head, resolving to go into the Jaws dictionary and fix it someday. Which I sometimes do, sometimes don't bother. Thanks again. Unfortunately, I use it so rarely I don't remember what that silly combination is. With regard to your pronunciation problem, there is, I believe, a setting in JAWS whereby it will recognize languages, other than English, automatically. I hope I've been a little helpful. Best regards, -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yardbird Sent: Thursday, March 12, 2009 5:31 PM To: JFW List Subject: Not getting Character creation with new Jaws update After reading the list of bug fixes and improvements in this update on the FS Web page about it, I was looking forward to again being able to create characters with diacritical marks and other things like the inverted question mark and inverted exclamation point in Spanish, in my word 2000. Sadly, what I expected hasn't come to pass. My attempts to produce an accented lowercase a result in nothing at all, just like before I installed the update. Yes, of course I restarted when the installation was complete, as instructed by the installation wizard. Could this be because my way of creating such characters is to use the Insert num row 4 command to get a list of such things to choose from and insert in the text? I haven't used the actual Word character function for years. It was difficult enough for me when I could see it, and with Jaws I never could figure it out at all, so I really welcomed it when someone on a list like this told everyone about the Insert 4 deal. For comparison, I can and do create such characters when I'm typing an email in my Outlook Express 6. Let me try that right here and see if it still works. I'll type the Spanish word for pharmacy with an accented a in the second syllable. or try to, anyway. Farmácia. yep. I got myself the a acute that I wanted. In Spanish, it would now have the accent on that second syllable and the last part would sound like see ya, not shuh. even though I can't figure out how to trick jaws into saying it right, at the moment. So Insert A still exists in this updated version. But it still won't work for me in Word anymore, which I think it used to do in Version 9 but gave up in Version 10. Maybe I misremember? Any helpful information will be appreciated. yes, I stick with Word 2000 on purpose, for certain reasons, so if that's the problem, that Jaws 10 doesn't fully "support" Word 2000, I'll have to let it go.
