As a suggestion, go to your computer store and tell them that you
*have* to
have XP Home otherwise your screen reader will not work.
Most dealers can put an OEM version of XP Home on your machine
without any
problem. If this fails give my dealer, Nanopac a call at (918)
665-0329.
I just got a Del with XP Home installed.
Also, take a look at Wal-Mart, they usually carry a Toshiba which
has XP
Home on it.
Remember that you do not need the most current, most powerful or
largest
laptop to do what the vast majority of us normally do.
Anything which approaches 2 ghz for speed will be sufficient. It
does,
however in my opinion, need a meg of RAM.

Welcome to the list. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to upgrade
from JAWS
5 to JAWS 8. It would require a new purchase. However, you can
upgrade for
free to JAWS 5.1, which many listers say is still a pretty
workable version,
though lacking in PDF-reading and other strengths. For the 5.1
upgrade,
you'd need to go to the FS website at
www.freedomscientific.com
All the same, it would be worth putting in a call to FS to make
sure. I
don't feel confident about this, but maybe they'd consider giving
you a
break if you mention you bought JAWS 5.0.
