in services, depending which one one looks at,
on my system,
are, 86 or 93 services, running in the back ground
like:
clip book, not remembering what some one told me what this is,
was, set to run automatically
remote access, networking
this is a personal home, computer which will never be networked so why have
remote access run automatically,
fax, I don't fax anything nor do I plan to
just to name a few,
warning warning
I have go back, from norton
with this new xp computer
turning off some services there are so, many that i do not understand
and the name is so, cryptic
that on occaision
i was able to turn off something off that was critical
and only because i had go back was able to recover what ever i had just done
to cripple my computer
such as turn the sound off

Just out of curiousity, what sorts of things have you discovered to be
running in the background that someone else might not have on their system?
Thanks.

will try tabbing to see the diference,
240 ram free, on your machine which means
there are fewer things running in the back ground,
than,, on mine,
and i am losing the battle
trying to,
turning off, things that don't need to be on
----- Original Message -----

and i agree, about the crashes, on the system that had, 98, and had xp put
over it,
there are more serious problems,
save what they can and format may be the best soulution

Hi,
In the interim, another lister provided me with directions, and I found this
information easily, using only the tab key at the last to move into the
area, and without any need to use the Jaws cursor or the Insert B command.
The information just read straight up and down, item by item.

Thank you for this explanation, nonetheless. Everything's is fine now.

Incidentally,, my own memory allocation statistics don't confirm the
numerous suggestions in this thread that insufficient memory is one of the
most predictable and likely culprits in a scenario involving certain kinds
of system hangings and crashes: On my own XP Home SP2 system,Out of my 512
Mb physical RAM, with Jaws, Word, Outlook Express and Internet Explorer all
running, and a fair-sized document loaded into Word, I still had 240 Mb RAM
free. From time to time I, too, have had crashes, though they exclusively
have involved the application Audible Manager. As I've said, I don't think
insufficient RAM is necessarily the best, first guess as to the cause of
this kind of malfunction.

Daniel

I followed your directions, but I couldn't find a listing for the state of
my system's memory. The last part of your directions must be the problem
for me; there are a number of tabs in this function. The first one is
General. Is that where you recommend pressing Page Down, and then arrowing
up through a list? To what? Please look at this again and, if you left out
a step or some description, please explain. I'd like to be able to check my
memory situation.
Thanks.

when you go to system tools
under accessories
to system information
route jaws to pc
page down and then, up arrow
how much ram is free?

when I start my monster up
on any given day
there is usually around 200 ram free
and most days i don't run out of ram
with 512 to start with
but lately, with the last 2 versions of jaws
there are times when jaws freezes up
maybe from opening too many programs up, and even after shutting them off
opening up openbook, then maybe burning a cd, then using omni page in word
to scan a another document etc etc

some programs don't give back the ram they used
i have been told ms word is one of them that don't give back the ram when
you close it
and the only solution is to shut down and restart

my technician, says, i am crazy
and more ram isn't gonna do anything for me
except cost me some mo money

I am not sure whether adding more ram will help or not
and I miss the three finger salute of my 98 machine
and being able to run a repair on internet explorer
when things get sluggish or stop in the middle of a session
but i don't miss the blue screen of death
with xp i don't get
but in the last couple of weeks my computer has restarted twice
in the middle of downloading music,
and
doing other things while it was busy
and have no idea what caused the crash

if, you do decide to get more ram, please keep us informed
if it solves the problems

Hi curmudgeon:
I have 512 megs of memory on this Intel processor with XP home. Do you
think it would more stable if I added another 512, I haven't ran your
cleanup suggestions yet but will do so in the next day or so.
Thanks,

i'd try

go into my computer
highlite your hard drive
alt enter to bring up properties
control tab to tools
enter on check for errors
but, tab around and check both check boxes
enter on ok
you will be told you must restart your computer to run the check errors
press ok
and then restart your computer
and let it run a full system check for errors
it may take 20 or 30 40 minutes
to run,
also, do a thorough cleaning out of temp files
disk clean up in properties
go into your hard drive into windows
p for prefetch
delete them they are more temp files
go into control panel
internet options
delete cookies, temp files, off line files, delete history
run a defragg whether it says it needs it or not
i would go to
www.google.com/ie
type in cleanup
the first choice will be
a microsoft utility
called cleanup. exe
down load it
install it
and run it
it will delete the hidden temp files that are hiding in your computer
after it runs do not restart your computer yet
like the pop up says to
tab to no
then route jaws to pc
page down then up arrow to see how much space has been recovered from how
many files

then restart your system

Hi:
I am running Xp home on a 3.5 Intel processor with 512 megs of memory with
JAWS 6.0, with service pack 2. I am getting lots of crashes in various
programs. I upgraded from 98(SE). I wonder if JAWS 6.0 is at fault? If
anyone could give me any advice I would appreciate it. One more does anyone

know the name of the log that shows what caused the crash and where it is
located?
Thanks,
George R. Marshall
