Okay. No wonder that sounded a bit exotic to me. A child window is a window within an MDI (multiple document interface) window. Multiple document interface (MDI) is a technique used by programmers for managing a set of windows that are opened into child windows that are constrained within a single parent window. That all sounds really technical, smile. But don't worry about it, Outlook Express and most programs don't use them. That is why you probably aren't familiar with the term, and actually even if you used a program with child windows you might not know the term, you would just learn the program. Another example of a program that uses child windows is Eudora. Child windows are maximized with alt dash. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 9:13 PM Subject: Mother and daughter windows (was Re: word and jaws) I'd like to know, also, what it means if someone says that both the "daughter" window and the main window in Word have to be maximized, if that's what meant, below. I'm not aware of any window but the Word interface with document and menu bar being present on a Word screen, and also I've found with Jaws that nearly every conventional application of mine, including Word, functions accurately with Word when it's set to display just in the "normal" window mode, not maximized. My impression is that sometimes, when something opens in a smaller window at first, as in the case of an Outlook Express message just clicked on, it does definitely help Jaws if you maximize the email using alt spacebar x. But I've never found anything of the sort to be necessary in the program per se, including Outlook Express when a message doesn't happen to be opened. I hope someone will explain this mother/daughter window and maximizing advice. thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alicia" <astarner@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 5:50 PM Subject: word and jaws Hello, Everyone: I am using JAWS 7.0 and Word 2003. When I open a document that has been previously created and try to arrow down the document one line at a time JAWS does not read the document correctly. There will be pauses in speech and sometimes the words are partially read as if there is a window on the screen. I was told that the daughter window and the main window in Word has to be maximized for the document to read correctly. What does this mean?
