  Steven,

I don't mind explaining. I just didn't want to write a detailed description
that no one needed.

A hanging indent is when the first character of the paragraph falls at the
left margin (or can be moved to the right away from the left margin if desired
with the TAB or a regular indent) and subsequent lines of that same paragraph
begin at a perdetermined distance from the left margin. Thus, when the text of
that paragraph wraps to a new line instead of the first character of that line
appearing on the left margin it is indented. The distance it gets indented is
determined by the number of times that the CTRL + T keystroke is pressed. I
believe it is still half an inch for each time you press the keystroke. It is a
Hanging Indent that is used when you set up a list using the Bullets and
Numbering feature of MS Word.

The normal Indent is easier to describe. When you press CTRL + M the cursor
moves half an inch from the left margin. Pressing it again moves another half
an inch and so on. When the lines of the text wrap to a new line the first
character of that line begins at the position of the first character of the
first line of the paragraph. Thus, the entire paragraph is indented the
predetermined distance from the left margin instead of just the second line and
the rest of the paragraph as with the Hanging Indent.

I'm pretty sure most people know this already, particularly braille readers,
if you press the TAB key you are technically saying that you want to indent
only the first line of the paragraph from the left margin and have all
subsequent lines of that paragraph fall on the left margin. This is how we used
to type on typewriters and of course is still done when producing Braille
documents.

There is one more really important thing to note about all of this, MS Word
loves to try to think for you and figure out what you meant when you pressed a
key. It assumes that you either don't know or don't understand what was just
described. So, if all of your Auto Formatting is turned on you may not get the
results that were just described without making changes to your default
settings for this feature.

I hope this helps. Formatting resumes can be a much easier chore if you
understand how to use Indents and Hanging Indents.

I'm only throwing my two cents worth in because no one has mentioned CTRL
+ M, which is actually the MS Word Indent hotkey and not CTRL + T which is the
hanging indent. There is a difference in how the text of an indented paragraph
prints out on the page versus one that has been assigned a hanging indent
looks. I'll only bore everyone with an the description if it is needed here.
Both of these can be set specific to how you want a paragraph, or selected set
of paragraphs, to look within the Paragraph Dialog. Just for the record, lines
with hard returns between them are paragraphs too.You can get to the Paragraph
Dialog using ALT + O and then P in both MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007.

Hope this helps someone out there. I confess that I'm not following the
thread all that closely.

          Hi friends,

I am trying to create a temporary indent in Microsoft Word so that I
can put an address on the righthand side of the page.
i used to do this by pressing CTRL+T to tab across to the place that
I want to start then do the address. As I pressed CTRL+T, JAWS would tell me
how far I was going across the page e.g. 1 inch, 2 inches etc but it doesn't
seem to do this any mor and the temporary indent doesn't seem to be moving
either.
Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong please?

          Many thanks in anticipation,

          Steve.
