Adam,

Here is a copy of a message I posted to another list on this topic; you
might find it interesting.

A recent message in Top Tech Tidbits included a very interesting email
exchange on this topic, and below is a cut and paste from that exchange,
posted by Ellen Mosner at Microsoft replying on behalf of Madelyn Bryant
McIntire.

"Microsoft is aware of the lack of accessibility of the recently
acquired GIANT anti-spyware product. The Microsoft product group that
is now working on GIANT is aware of its accessibility issues, and has
been working closely with the Accessible Technology group on developing
a plan to make the product accessible. The current release from
Microsoft of GIANT is only a beta release and we intend to fully address
the issues by the time the product ships in its final form. Even though
the product was a shipping product at the time we acquired it, we
decided to remove it from the "shipping" status and make it a beta
because of the accessibility problems associated with the product.
Microsoft remains fully committed to the accessibility of our products."

Note there are four Ts at the start of that email address.

Subject: Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta1

Hi all,
Just got an email complaining about the "the best antispyware utility
created... Beta release not accessible to users of screen readers" This
version works only in Windows 2000 and XP. I put it to the test with
Jaws 5.1 and 6 in XP, and it's true, there's no way to use it with Jaws.
In other words, you can locate the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the
Desktop or the Start Menu item if you want, open it normally, but
there's no way to go any further. You can play with Jaws cursors all day
long, and there's nothing you can do to access the Run button. So, it
seems, according to the email received, that this Beta version was
designed for sighted customers, not people using screen readers.
Honestly, I think that Alpha or Beta testing must include all computer
users, whether they are sighted or not. If you need a copy of the email
in question, please feel free to contact me off list. If you need to
download the Beta version for whatever reason, just go to microsoft.com,
locate the downloads link, and download the Beta1.
